Books to get you through

If you're in job or internship mode, you might want to pick up the two books we're using in the Journalism Launchpad class: The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want To Be by Jack Canfield (UMass alum!), and What Color is Your Parachute, 2009 edition, by Richard Bolles. Both have proven to be extremely useful and valuable to students.

A few of the tips from Canfield that resonated with students:

Take 100 percent responsibility for your life.
Don't whine. Stop complaining.

Event + Response = Outcome.
You can't control events, but you can control how you respond to them.

Ask, ask, ask!
You don't get anything you don't ask for. In the first week, students had to tell ten people they were job hunting. We got some surprisingly positive results.

I took the Launchpad class last semester and had to read a couple chapters in the Success Principles. It is one of the most motivating books I have ever read. I suggest buying it!
